Yay back into the swing of things this week. Still sick unfortunately but got to keep chugging along.
It was a good week at SBL this week. Was awesome to meet the kids I missed out on meeting last week. This class is a digital class so the dynamics are different to the class I am in on a Tuesday.
I done a lot this week, I took 3 running records, and I still have to do more as the focus students I have were at an independent level and we are required to get an instructional level piece of text to analyze and plan from there.
I observed and assisted a group in Maths. They were doing perimeters. They had to find out the perimeter of the 2 netball courts joined together. They soon discovered that the short sides of one court was the same as the other side, and vice versa with the long sides. I advised them to write down all their measurements alongside a duplicate but smaller image of their findings, and this way they wouldn't keep forgetting them when we were ready to calculate the total. They all had different ways of calculating and measuring, but together through social constructivism they solved their equation and were very happy with their work.
I also took another group regarding perimeter and area and helped them figure out how to solve the 2 different problems.
The class got called back for class photos because the photographer had miscounted the students and one was missing. The teacher requested for me to join them, I wasn't sure if I should or not, but I followed instructions and hopped in. Now I know why the teachers were all dressed up that day.
I assisted a PE lesson, they were doing rugby skills. Kicking conversions. This was cool. The kids really enjoyed this. They thought it was hilarious that one side was easier to kick from than the other.
Wednesday
I watched a really neat and engaging literature lesson today. The teacher played a Pluto and Donald duck movie through brainfood time. They are learning to stretch out their stories (Beginning, middle, end) and have detail in their stories. They brainstormed some ideas, wrote done verbs to use in their stories, then went off to build their stories. This was started on Monday, s today was the 'end' part. Afterwards the teacher asked them to circle their favourite 'doing word' in their story.
I done 2 running records with my focus student, but I still need to do another one (as discussed with my EIT teacher) because her level was still high. Having to do double the workload with 2 focus kids is becoming rather difficult with trying to get everything done.
I was with a reliever after lunch, we went and played t.ball, the teacher discovered when we were out there that there was actually no bats so we had to improvise, and it all worked out fine. Was a great thinking on the spot strategy.
I took netball practice after school and their is a list of things to work on after our last game. I discovered we needed to work on straight line passes, and centre pass offs so this is what the focus was.
Saturdays game was amazing. The entire team put everything they learned in practice on the court. Was a huge improvement, and they won 26-1. This made them very happy and eager for more.
Great, that you are keeping on top of the workload as well as actively engaging in as much teaching and learning as possible Rosalie. You have also discovered some of the challenges teachers have with collecting assessment information (running records in your case) and how long it takes.
ReplyDeleteRosalie, you have experienced a wide range of activities while on SBL and you are fully engaged with the classes where you are placed. You have established a strong presence in the school and know the routines which will be helpful for practicum. Enjoy spending the three weeks with one class practicing your teaching skills more deeply.
