26th and 27th August- week 6, semester 2, term 3

This week at SBL was very production orientated. It was the week all the students had been working so hard towards for the passed term and a half about Maori myths and legends. All their creative thinking, planning and participation had come together as one, kotahitanga.

I was fortunate to be invited to watch the first full production casting before the evening show that night. It was called  "Journey through the Legends". It was so gratifying to have assisted some of these learners and see them motivated and engaged with their learning, aswell as building their confidence to perform to an audience.

I did an activity with a group of learners to get to know them. I decided to give then a piece of A3 paper and get them to draw a picture of who is in their family. I had oral conversations about their drawings and got to know abit about who they were, what is important to them, their favourite colour, sport and hobby etc. I learnt that they all loved animals and they all loved baking and cupcakes. With this information I dewcided to follow on with this lesson by making some cupcakes at home and getting the students to ice them in their favourite colour icing, and to do some for the rest of their class. I had organised a lesson that unfortunately did not go to plan, as the production was longer than expected, therefore the lesson was shorter and rushed, going into the lunchbreak. The students feedback was enthusiastic, they enjoyed the learning process of creating something, and mixing colours to achieve different combinations.

The rest of the class was thrilled to be receiving a cupcake too :)

On reflection, I would have made batches of the icing at home and given each student a bag to colour, then ice. This would've saved time and mess...even though the students thought it was so awesome and the messy creative play was fun "as we don't get to do anything fun like this to learn"
