WEEK 3: 11 & 12 March, 2014

This week I experienced a challenge which caught me by surprise, but gave me a good topic to reflect on. We had to plan a PE lesson for our group of learners that we got to play a game with last week. With my observing of circle dodgeball I acknowledged their abilities to pass and catch balls were of a mastered level so thought I would challenge myself and do something I have never taught before and decided on kicking. I love all physical activity and was looking forward to this challenge and thought this was the perfect opportunity to be a bit out of my comfort zone. I gathered some information, spoke to some keen soccer enthusiast friends and organised what I thought was a well designed lesson plan.

I was thrilled for the moment to arrive that I could put my lesson plan into action, I had no doubts at all that this wouldn't be smooth sailing, so off I went to round up my troops and that's when I discovered I only had half of my allocated group, the rest were either at camp or Kapa haka. However, I was given a couple of extra kids, not quite enough for what I had planned but I was happy with this. I knew right then I had to re-evaluate my guided discoveries and games I had thoroughly organised as my tasks were majorly peer based.  This reminded me and reinforced how important it is to have a backup plan and thinking on the spot is crucial to engaging the students and working with what you have.

I went to gather my equipment, instantly I knew the balls I had requested were not correct, and then I knew I was going to struggle with my lesson plan with all the above factors adding up. I sat my learners down, explained the expectations I had with behaviour and management etc, demonstrated what the first activity was and then we began our lesson with a warmup game. The resources and equipment I had did make the tasks harder for my learners but they did manage to do their best with the very bouncy balls, and dispite having an odd number the pair work did work, I joined in when I needed to.

I had a lot to reflect on after this lesson and I look forward to having my follow up lesson on Tuesday and re-teaching similar skills of kicking and stopping with different guided discoveries and games, the correct equipment is going to make a big difference and  I will set up my games and boundaries prior to getting my learners. I will also be keeping my lesson basic with my original group seen as our MT changed out PE lesson so the factors from the past week or absent students will not being a factor but our time is shortened and another candidate teacher will be recording/observing me.
